An increasing awareness of specialized populations leads to a new facility in 1949 for youthful male offenders, Apalachee Correctional Institution - East Unit at Sneads (ten years later the West Unit is built).

Inmate canteens, such as this one at Florida State Prison, remain in existence today. Here inmates can purchase items ranging from snacks and drinks to deodorant, sneakers and board games. The profits from inmate canteens go into the State’s General Revenue Fund, after FDC recoups its operating costs.
