OFFENDER POPULATIONS JUNE 30, 1988:
INMATES: 33,681
SUPERVISED: 84,138

Prison population on June 30, 1988 grows to 33,681. Legislature authorizes 4,085 more beds, including two new prisons and four work camps.

Provisional Release Credits replace Administrative Gaintime, with tighter restrictions on which inmates are eligible. (For more information see the Historical Summary of Sentencing and Punishment in Florida.)

Offender Based Information System (OBIS): New databases implemented this year include the Placement and Program Counseling (PPC) System. The Placement and Program Counseling subsystem is introduced to field staff and enables them to track inmates through educational and vocational programs and is still in use today.

Holmes Correctional Institution (Bonifay, FL), Calhoun Correctional Institution (Blountstown, FL) and Central Florida Reception Center (Orlando, FL) open. Six new work camps are phased in.

Large, offset presses demand many hours of training. Inmates work hard to learn the necessary skills required to operate these highly sophisticated machines. PRIDE supervisors relate their experiences to the inmates to facilitate the learning process.
