Prison population on June 30, 1988 grows to 33,681. Legislature authorizes 4,085 more beds, including two new prisons and four work camps.

Offender Based Information System (OBIS): New databases implemented this year include the Placement and Program Counseling (PPC) System. The Placement and Program Counseling subsystem is introduced to field staff and enables them to track inmates through educational and vocational programs and is still in use today.
Holmes Correctional Institution (Bonifay, FL), Calhoun Correctional Institution (Blountstown, FL) and Central Florida Reception Center (Orlando, FL) open. Six new work camps are phased in.
